fight the frizz in ljubljana’s fog
Ljubljana’s fog may transform the city into a magical, misty wonderland, but your hair might not love it as much. Humidity can lead to frizz, flyaways, and dull strands, leaving your style unpredictable. From scalp care to humidity-proof styling hacks, I have prepared some practical tips to help you protect your hair and keep it smooth, hydrated, and beautifully managed.
Why Fog Affects Your Hair
Fog increases humidity, which causes hair to swell and frizz, especially in fine, curly, or chemically treated hair. Damp air also draws moisture out of your strands, leaving your hair dull or difficult to manage throughout the day. Even your scalp health can suffer too, because excess moisture may lead to mild build-up or imbalance, especially when you’re using heavy products on an almost daily basis.
Styling in Foggy Conditions
Step 1: Prep Your Hair
Hydrate first. Use a (deep) cleansing shampoo to remove build-up and product residue from your scalp and hair, followed by a moisturising shampoo for your scalp and conditioner appropriate for your hair type, as well as a hair mask every two weeks. Include a scalp treatment in the mix once or twice a week to prevent itchiness caused by the fluctuating humidity.
Step 2: Protect Your Style
Use anti-frizz products. Serums or lightweight oils can coat strands, making them “stick” together and preventing humidity from penetrating the hair and causing it to frizz.
Seal your ends and avoid overloading. Apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner to the tips instead of overloading on styling products. The conditioner gives the hair additional moisture as opposed to styling products that contain ingredients such as ethanol in hairsprays or petrolatum in waxes that not only weigh the hair down but also attract moisture which can worsen frizz.
Step 3: Style Strategically
Blow-dry with caution. Believe it or not, blow-drying your hair can help to prevent the frizz and flyaways. Try battling the odds and use a blow-dryer with a nozzle attachment to smooth the hair cuticle while directing airflow downward and always direct the blow-dryer from the scalp toward the ends.
And to my curly friends, the diffuser is your best friend in winter! Don’t be afraid to add more moisturising products to help define your curls.
Apply the Davines LOVE/ curl cream to damp, towel-dried hair and diffuse like always. Before the hair is completely dry, add another dollop of the product sealing your ends before drying your hair completely. Don’t give the fog a chance to penetrate your hair and ruin your style with annoying flyaways.
Choose humidity-friendly styles over the under-mistletoe waves: Don’t let the Christmas chick-flicks fool you, scarves, hats and earmuffs are essential, even if we haven’t reached that 0°C yet. So, brew the mulled wine and cosy up to some fun YouTube tutorials and play around with braids, buns, or updos that will hold better in this foggy Ljubljana weather.
Bottom Line
Ljubljana’s fog may add a mystic romance to the city, but it can challenge your hair. With a consistent scalp and hair routine, combined with a few styling hacks, you can fight the frizz in Ljubljana’s fog and keep your hair hydrated, smooth, and beautifully managed.
